British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
